Overview

Otzberg Castle, known as Veste Otzberg, is a historic hilltop fortress situated on a 368-meter extinct volcanic cone in the Odenwald region of Hesse. First documented in 1231, the site served as a strategic outpost for the Electorate of the Palatinate and later as a Hessian administrative center. The fortress complex is famous for its distinctive white tower, which is visible from significant distances across the surrounding landscape. The site features an inner bailey, a curtain wall, and various half-timbered administrative buildings dating from the 16th to 18th centuries. The castle currently houses a local history museum that focuses on the architectural evolution of the site and regional heritage. Unlike many other regional strongholds, the site was never destroyed by major military conflicts, preserving its original medieval layout. Visitors can access the tower to view the Hessian Ried and the Frankfurt skyline on clear days.
