Overview

Castle Augustusburg is a 16th-century Renaissance hunting lodge located on a basalt mountain in the Ore Mountains of Saxony. Known as the 'Crown of the Ore Mountains,' it was commissioned by Elector Augustus of Saxony between 1568 and 1572. The complex houses the Motorcycle Museum, which features an extensive collection of historic two-wheeled vehicles. Visitors can also explore the Carriage Museum and the Museum of Hunting and Ornithology. The castle's well remains a notable feature, reaching a depth of approximately 130 meters through solid rock. The site serves as a cultural hub hosting regular exhibitions and events within its fortified walls. It has never been conquered throughout its history, preserving its original architectural integrity. The location provides views extending across the Zschopau Valley.

Photo spot

The outer defensive wall terrace offers a wide-angle perspective of the surrounding Ore Mountains and the Zschopau Valley.

Insider tips

Check the wind conditions on the viewing platform, as the altitude makes it significantly cooler and windier than in the valley below.

Explore the courtyard thoroughly, as many of the historical details and smaller exhibition entrances are located there rather than the main gate.

Wear comfortable, flat walking shoes due to the cobblestone surfaces throughout the interior courtyards.

What to avoid

Do not attempt to walk up from the valley floor without proper hiking gear, as the incline is steep and strenuous.

Good to know

The castle remains open year-round, though some exhibitions may have limited seasonal availability during winter months.
