Interesting facts
1

The beach is widely considered the safest on the island for swimming due to the lack of submerged obstacles or hidden rocks.

2

Lipa Noi is located near the Raja Ferry pier, which connects the island to the mainland province of Surat Thani.

3

The water clarity can fluctuate significantly during the monsoon season due to the soft, sandy seabed being stirred by currents.

4

Because the water is consistently shallow, the beach is often subjected to long stretches of exposed wet sand during extreme low tides.

Overview

Lipa Noi Beach is a shallow, sand-bottomed beach located on the west coast of Koh Samui. It is characterized by the absence of rocks and coral in the swimming areas, making it uniquely family-friendly. The seabed remains at a constant, shallow depth for several hundred meters, which is ideal for small children. The area is largely free from heavy commercial development, maintaining a more natural shoreline compared to Chaweng or Lamai. Most of the coastline is bordered by palm trees and low-density private villas. It is a premier location for viewing sunsets due to its westward orientation across the Gulf of Thailand.

Photo spot

The shoreline near the beach's northern end offers the best perspective of the sunset with silhouettes of nearby islands.

Insider tips

Bring reef-safe sunscreen as there is very little natural shade provided by buildings or structures along the high-tide line.

Visit during high tide if you prefer swimming; during low tide, you must walk significant distances into the water to reach a swimming depth.

Footwear is generally not required for swimming because the ocean floor is composed entirely of fine sand.

What to avoid

Avoid walking too far out into the water during very low tides, as it can be difficult to navigate back through the mud-like sand.

Etiquette

Standard beach attire is acceptable; however, cover up when entering nearby restaurants or local village areas.
