The asymmetric design of the arches was an engineering solution to the varying current strengths of the Kir River during spring floods.
The masonry incorporates limestone and mortar, reflecting construction techniques typical of the 18th-century Ottoman Balkans.
Despite its age, the structure has survived numerous major floods of the Kir River due to its specific hydrodynamic design.
It is currently classified as a Cultural Monument of the First Category by the Albanian government.
Mesi Bridge is a 108-meter-long stone arch bridge spanning the Kir River in the village of Mes, north of Shkodër. Built around 1770 by Kara Mahmud Pasha, it serves as one of the best-preserved examples of Ottoman-era bridge architecture in Albania. The structure features 13 asymmetrical stone arches of varying sizes, designed to handle the river's high seasonal water flow. It was constructed using local limestone blocks joined by stone masonry techniques. The bridge originally connected Shkodër to the mountain regions of Drisht and the northern trade routes. It remains pedestrian-only, though it is no longer used for major transit due to modern road construction. The central arch is the largest and highest, creating a distinct curved profile. The bridge sits in a rural valley setting surrounded by olive groves and karst terrain.
The riverbank slightly downstream offers the best angle to capture the full curve and the reflection of all 13 arches.
Wear sturdy, non-slip footwear as the historic stone surface is uneven and can be slick.
Bring sun protection, as there is very little natural shade on or directly around the bridge structure.
Visit early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid harsh midday sunlight and heat.
Do not attempt to cross in a vehicle; the bridge is designed strictly for pedestrians. Do not climb on the loose side walls of the bridge to protect the structure from erosion.
