Overview

Bali Botanical Garden, officially known as Kebun Raya Bali, is Indonesia’s largest botanical garden, spanning 157 hectares at an altitude of 1,250 to 1,450 meters above sea level. Established in 1959, the garden functions as a primary center for botanical research, plant conservation, and education. It houses thousands of plant species, including extensive collections of orchids, begonias, ferns, and medicinal plants. The site features the Bali Treetop Adventure Park, which offers a circuit of rope courses, suspension bridges, and flying foxes integrated into the forest canopy. The garden serves as a research station for the Indonesian Institute of Sciences. Its location in the Bedugul highlands results in a cool, misty climate significantly different from Bali’s coastal regions. Visitors can explore various themed gardens, including a cactus greenhouse, a rose garden, and a rhododendron collection. The landscape includes large open lawns suitable for picnics and significant areas of preserved tropical mountain forest.

Insider tips

Bring a light jacket or sweater, as the highland elevation makes the garden significantly cooler than the beach areas.

Wear closed-toe, non-slip shoes if you plan to participate in the Treetop Adventure rope courses.

Bring an umbrella or raincoat, as sudden mist and afternoon mountain showers are common regardless of the season.

What to avoid

Do not attempt to walk the entire perimeter on foot, as the park is vast and hilly; renting a bicycle or using a car is standard.

Etiquette

Maintain silence near conservation areas, avoid picking plants or flowers, and carry all trash out of the park.
