Overview

Shri Nageshi Temple is a historic Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, located in the Bandiwade village of Ponda, Goa. It is notable for being one of the few temples in the region that remained at its original site during the 16th-century religious conversions. The current structure dates back to the 18th century, with renovations commissioned by the Maratha ruler Shahu Maharaj in 1750. The temple complex features a prominent 'deepstambha' (lamp tower) and a large sacred water tank known as a 'tali'. The architecture incorporates typical Goan temple elements, including a 'sabha mandap' (assembly hall) with carved wooden pillars. Several stone inscriptions found within the temple complex provide historical data dating back to the 15th century. The presiding deity is represented by a lingam, considered to be 'swayambhu' or self-manifested.
