Overview

The Mehmed Pasha Sokolovich Bridge is a 16th-century Ottoman masonry structure spanning the Drina River in Višegrad, Bosnia and Herzegovina. Commissioned by Grand Vizier Mehmed Pasha Sokolović and designed by royal architect Mimar Sinan, it was completed in 1577. The bridge consists of 11 pointed masonry arches with a wide ramp leading onto the bridge at the left bank. It is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List for its architectural significance and structural durability. The structure features a widened central area known as the kapija, historically used as a gathering point for local commerce and conversation. The bridge survived major floods and military conflicts throughout the 20th century, including significant damage during the First World War. Restoration projects, supported by international agencies, have stabilized the masonry and preserved the original design elements. It serves as a primary pedestrian connection between the two banks of the Drina River.
