Overview

Rozhledna Varhošť is a steel observation tower located on the summit of Varhošť hill in the Bohemian Central Highlands. It is one of the few towers in the Czech Republic offering a unique multi-perspective view of the Elbe River, which curves around the hill in such a way that it is visible from the top at eight different points. The current structure, standing 15 meters tall, was built in 1973 as the fourth tower on this site since the late 19th century. Its metal construction features a distinctive spiral staircase design. The summit reaches an elevation of 639 meters above sea level. Surrounding the base are forested slopes typical of the Hlinná area. The tower is managed by the local municipality and remains accessible as a public viewpoint. It serves as a navigational landmark for hikers traveling the regional ridge trails.

Insider tips

Wear sturdy hiking boots as the access paths are unpaved and can be muddy.

Bring binoculars to identify the distant landmarks along the Elbe river bends.

Check weather conditions before departing, as the metal structure can be windy and visibility is significantly reduced in low-hanging clouds.

What to avoid

Do not attempt to drive directly to the summit, as access is restricted to pedestrian hiking trails.

Good to know

Open year-round, but access may be restricted during severe icing conditions in winter.

Etiquette

Maintain silence as the acoustic nature of the steel platform carries sound long distances.
