Overview

The Sanctuary on San Cristóbal Hill is home to the 14-meter-tall statue of the Immaculate Conception, which overlooks the city of Santiago. Situated at the summit of San Cristóbal Hill within the Metropolitan Park, the site serves as both a religious monument and an observation deck. The bronze statue was manufactured in France and inaugurated at its current location in 1908. A stone amphitheater and chapel are located at the base of the statue for religious ceremonies. The site is accessible via a funicular railway that has been operating since 1925. It provides a panoramic view of the Santiago valley and the Andes mountain range. Pope John Paul II held a mass at this location during his 1987 visit to Chile.

Insider tips

Bring a windbreaker or additional layers, as the summit is significantly windier and cooler than the city base.

Visit during clear, post-rain days for the best visibility of the Andes mountains.

Carry water and sunscreen as there is limited shade at the immediate summit observation platform.

What to avoid

Attempting to walk up the steep service roads during peak midday heat; relying on ride-share apps that may have difficulty accessing restricted summit zones.

Good to know

The funicular may suspend operations during high-wind events or scheduled maintenance periods.

Etiquette

Maintain a respectful volume near the chapel and amphitheater; avoid disruptive behavior during religious services.
