Overview

Patwon Ki Haveli is a cluster of five interconnected 19th-century mansions located in the heart of Jaisalmer, Rajasthan. Built by Guman Chand Patwa, a wealthy brocade and silver jewelry merchant, the complex features elaborate stone carvings on its yellow sandstone facades. The site serves as a museum showcasing the lifestyle, textiles, and artifacts of the 19th-century merchant class. It is renowned for its architectural intricate jharokhas (overhanging enclosed balconies) and detailed arched gateways. The complex is divided into several private residences, with parts maintained as a museum for public viewing. The internal courtyards exhibit traditional Rajasthani craftsmanship, including mirror work, wall paintings, and antique furniture. Each of the five havelis was constructed individually over 50 years to house the family's different members. It stands as a prime example of the haveli architecture typical of the Thar Desert region.
