Overview

The Cedar Promenade of Inner Togakushi, located in Nagano, is a nearly 500-meter-long approach lined with approximately 200 massive Japanese cedar trees. These trees, known as 'sugi,' were planted around 400 years ago during the Edo period. The pathway serves as the main access route leading directly to the Okusha (Inner Shrine) of the Togakushi Shrine complex. The trees are recognized as a prefectural designated natural monument due to their significant age and uniform spacing. The path features a gradual incline as it progresses toward the base of Mount Togakushi. A distinctive vermilion-lacquered wooden gate, the Zuishin-mon, marks the transition between the outer approach and the dense grove. The soil and root systems are protected to maintain the health of the ancient timber. Visitors walk along a cleared dirt path that maintains a constant canopy shade regardless of seasonal weather.

Insider tips

Wear sturdy, closed-toe walking shoes as the ground is uneven and can be muddy.

Bring an extra layer even in summer, as the temperature within the forest grove is significantly cooler than the surrounding area.

Stay strictly on the designated path to avoid compacting the root systems of the ancient trees.

What to avoid

Attempting the walk in formal footwear or high heels, and straying from the marked path into the forest undergrowth.

Good to know

Access may be restricted during heavy winter snowfalls when the path becomes impassable.

Etiquette

Maintain silence to respect the spiritual nature of the Shinto shrine approach; do not touch or lean on the ancient trees.
