Overview

Anıtkabir is the monumental mausoleum of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder and first president of the Republic of Türkiye. Situated on Rasattepe hill, the site covers 750,000 square meters and includes the Hall of Honor, a ceremonial plaza, and a museum complex. The architecture integrates Seljuk and Ottoman stylistic elements with a modern, functional design. Atatürk's sarcophagus is located in the Hall of Honor, positioned directly above his actual burial chamber in the subterranean level. The complex is flanked by the Lion Road, a 262-meter path lined with 24 Hittite-style lion statues. Construction of the mausoleum spanned nine years, beginning in 1944 and concluding in 1953. The site also serves as the final resting place for İsmet İnönü, the second president of Turkey, located in a sarcophagus opposite the Hall of Honor.
