Overview

Gwalior Fort is an 8th-century hilltop fortification spanning a 3-square-kilometer plateau overlooking Gwalior city. The complex is enclosed by a high sandstone wall and features six palaces, multiple water tanks, and several temples built across different dynastic periods. The Man Mandir Palace, commissioned by Raja Man Singh Tomar in the 15th century, is distinguished by its intricate blue-tiled exterior and subterranean chambers. The Teli ka Mandir, standing nearly 100 feet tall, represents a fusion of North and South Indian architectural styles. Sculptures of Jain Tirthankaras, carved directly into the rock face, line the cliff sides surrounding the fort’s approach. The fort has historically been under the control of the Tomars, Mughals, Marathas, and the British. The Gurudwara Data Bandi Chhor is located within the walls, commemorating the imprisonment of Guru Hargobind. Its elevation provides a panoramic view of the Gwalior urban sprawl.
