Overview

Tollenstein Castle Ruins (Tolštejn) occupy a strategic hilltop position in the Lužice Mountains, dating back to the early 14th century. The site consists of fragmented sandstone masonry and defensive walls remaining from a gothic fortress that was burned and largely destroyed during the Thirty Years' War in 1642. The castle ruins are situated at an elevation of 670 meters, offering panoramic views of the surrounding Lusatian Mountains and the Bohemian Switzerland region. A dedicated iron staircase provides access to the highest points of the ruins, allowing for observation of the inner courtyard and wall segments. The site functions as a popular destination for hikers and cyclists exploring the Lužické hory Protected Landscape Area. Several marked trails connect the castle to the nearby Jedlová mountain summit and the village of Jiřetín pod Jedlovou.

Insider tips

Wear sturdy hiking boots as the paths are uneven and often contain loose gravel or slick rock surfaces.

Check weather reports specifically for the peak elevation, as winds can be significantly stronger than in the valley.

Carry a physical map or GPS device, as cell service can be intermittent in the deeper forested sections of the trail.

What to avoid

Attempting to access the ruins during or immediately after heavy rainfall, when stone surfaces become dangerously slippery.

Good to know

The site is publicly accessible, but internal service buildings or kiosks may only operate during the peak summer tourist season.

Etiquette

Practice 'leave no trace' principles; do not climb on non-stabilized masonry or restricted wall sections.
