Interesting facts
1

The eastern face of Monte Rosa is the only Himalayan-style peak face located in the Alps, rising over 2,500 meters from the valley floor.

2

The Belvedere glacier is one of the few glaciers in the Alps that has experienced 'surging' behavior, where it undergoes periods of rapid movement followed by stagnation.

3

The chairlift system provides access to the 'Sentiero Glaciologico', a path featuring markers that illustrate the historical retreat of the glacier ice over the last century.

4

The location serves as the starting point for high-altitude treks leading toward the Zamboni-Zappa mountain refuge.

5

Construction and maintenance of the lift require specific engineering considerations due to the active and shifting nature of the moraine terrain.

Overview

The Seggiovie Belvedere chairlift serves as a critical access point to the eastern wall of Monte Rosa, the highest face in the Alps. Located in the Pecetto district of Macugnaga, the lift system transports visitors from the valley floor to the Belvedere glacier area at approximately 1,932 meters. The lift operates in two stages, connecting Pecetto to Alpe Burki and subsequently to the Belvedere plateau. From the arrival station, visitors gain immediate access to the Moriana moraine, which provides panoramic views of the glacier and the surrounding peaks. The lift system functions as both a tourist attraction in summer and a ski infrastructure component during winter months. It provides the closest vantage point to the Nordend and Dufourspitze peaks of the Monte Rosa massif from the Italian side.

Insider tips

Bring layers, as temperatures at the 1,932-meter terminal are significantly lower than in the Pecetto village.

Wear sturdy, closed-toe hiking boots, as the terrain around the upper station consists of loose moraine rock and uneven paths.

Check local weather alerts for wind conditions, as the lift may pause operations during high-altitude gusts.

What to avoid

Attempting to walk onto the actual glacier ice without professional alpine equipment and a guide.

Good to know

The lift operates seasonally, typically opening for the summer hiking season from late June through early September and resuming during the winter ski season; it is generally closed during the shoulder months of May and October.

Etiquette

Maintain silence near the glacial edge to respect the fragile environment; follow designated paths to prevent erosion on the unstable moraine.
