Overview

Gokak Waterfalls is a horse-shoe shaped waterfall on the Ghataprabha River, spanning 177 meters in width. The river plunges 52 meters over a sandstone cliff ledge. A historic pedestrian suspension bridge built in 1907 spans the river above the falls. The site features the Sir Claude Hamilton Bridge, which connects the banks above the cataract. During the peak monsoon season, the water volume increases significantly, turning the falls into a massive, muddy brown torrent. The area surrounding the falls includes an 18th-century temple dedicated to Lord Mahalingeshwara situated on the rocky terrain. The waterfall is often described as a miniature version of Niagara Falls due to its shape and structure.

Insider tips

Visit during the monsoon season for maximum water flow, but be prepared for heavy mist.

Wear footwear with strong grip as the surrounding rock surfaces become slippery when wet.

Stick to designated viewing areas, as the rocks near the edge are unstable and dangerous.

What to avoid

Do not attempt to swim or wade into the river near the falls, as the currents are extremely powerful and the riverbed is filled with jagged rocks.

Etiquette

Maintain caution near the cliff edges; dress modestly if visiting the temple on the river bank.
