Overview

Dōjō-ji is the oldest temple in Wakayama Prefecture, founded in 701 AD. It is centrally famous for the tragic Anchin and Kiyohime folk tale, where a spurned woman transforms into a serpent to chase a monk who hid inside the temple's bell. This legend serves as a central theme of the temple's cultural identity and is performed through narrative chanting known as 'emaki-toki'. The temple grounds house several structures, including a wooden Hondo (Main Hall) and a Treasure Hall that exhibits artifacts related to the serpent legend. It is the 29th stop on the Saigoku Kannon Pilgrimage route. The current main hall was reconstructed in the late 14th century. The temple's collection includes National Treasures and Important Cultural Properties. Its architecture features distinct Muromachi-period characteristics.
