Overview

Cascada cu apa termala Toplita is a rare thermal waterfall located in the town of Toplița, Harghita County, Romania. The waterfall is formed by thermal water originating from the nearby Bradul and Banffy springs, which maintains a constant temperature of approximately 27 degrees Celsius year-round. Due to the high calcium carbonate content, the water creates unique travertine deposits that expand the waterfall's structure over time. The waterfall features a reddish-brown coloration caused by iron oxide deposits within the mineral-rich water. It is one of the few natural thermal waterfalls in Europe. The site is a protected geological monument of local interest.

Insider tips

Wear footwear with good grip as the surrounding travertine and moss can be extremely slippery.

The site is small and located in a residential area, so combine your visit with other regional attractions in Harghita.

Visit during the early morning to avoid crowds and capture the steam rising from the water in cooler temperatures.

What to avoid

Do not mistake the waterfall for a public bathing facility; it is a geological site for viewing rather than swimming.

Etiquette

Do not climb on the fragile travertine formations or attempt to swim directly in the cascade outflow as it is a protected natural site.
