Overview

Tokat Castle is a Byzantine-era fortification perched on a rugged volcanic rock formation overlooking the city of Tokat. The site features 28 bastions and was historically utilized as a prison for notable political figures, including Vlad the Impaler. Its architectural foundations date back to the 5th century, though significant repairs were conducted during the Seljuk and Ottoman periods. The structure is accessed via a steep, winding path that traverses the limestone cliffs. Subterranean passages and cisterns remain partially intact within the complex. Recent restoration efforts have stabilized the outer walls to allow pedestrian access to the upper ramparts. The fortress provided strategic defense for the surrounding valley throughout the medieval period.
