Overview

Belapur Fort is a 16th-century fortification strategically positioned on a hillock overlooking the Panvel Creek. The structure was originally built by the Siddis of Janjira and subsequently captured by the Portuguese in 1682. In 1733, the Marathas under Chimaji Appa regained control of the fort, incorporating it into their coastal defense network. The site currently consists of crumbling stone walls, overgrown vegetation, and remnants of vaulted chambers. Its elevated position offers panoramic views of the surrounding mangrove forests and the expanding Navi Mumbai skyline. Despite its historical significance, the fort remains largely unrestored, serving as an open-access archaeological ruin.

Insider tips

Wear sturdy hiking shoes as the terrain leading to the fort is uneven and contains loose debris.

Carry sufficient water as there are no amenities or vendors on the hill.

Visit during daylight hours only, as the lack of lighting makes the ruins difficult to navigate after dusk.

What to avoid

Avoid visiting during the peak of the monsoon season, as the ascent becomes slippery and overgrown with dense vegetation.
