Overview

Landsford Canal State Park is home to the world's largest known population of Rocky Shoals Spider Lilies, which bloom annually in the Catawba River. The park preserves the remains of a 19th-century canal system designed to bypass the river's rapids for commercial boat traffic. Visitors can explore the 1.5-mile Canal Trail, which follows the historic canal bed and displays original stone lock structures. The site encompasses 448 acres along the banks of the Catawba River in Chester County, South Carolina. Established in 1954, the park facilitates activities including hiking, picnicking, and canoeing. The river shoals provide a critical habitat for diverse aquatic wildlife. The park infrastructure includes remains of a mill site and remnants of stone masonry from the canal era. Maintenance of the trail system allows for year-round access to the riparian forest environment.

Insider tips

Bring insect repellent during the warmer months as the riparian environment can attract significant mosquito populations.

Wear sturdy, closed-toe walking shoes to navigate uneven terrain and gravel paths near the canal locks.

Check local river flow reports before attempting to launch a canoe or kayak, as high water levels can make the shoals dangerous.

What to avoid

Attempting to wade into the river shoals during high water periods or when warning signs are posted due to strong, unpredictable currents.

Etiquette

Stay on marked trails to protect the fragile riverbank ecosystem and do not pick or disturb the endangered spider lilies.
