Overview

The Quiraing is a landslip located on the northernmost summit of the Trotternish Ridge on the Isle of Skye. It remains the only part of the Trotternish landslip that is still moving, with small annual shifts in the terrain. The landscape features iconic rock formations, including The Needle, The Prison, and The Table. Hikers traverse a high-level circuit that offers expansive views of the Sound of Raasay and the Scottish mainland. The terrain consists of narrow, uneven paths crossing grassy slopes and steep cliff edges. It serves as a geological highlight formed by ancient volcanic activity and subsequent mass movement. The area is part of the Trotternish National Scenic Area. High winds and rapidly changing weather conditions are common throughout the year.

Insider tips

Use trekking poles to navigate the steep, slippery slopes and unstable scree paths.

Check the local mountain weather forecast specifically, as conditions differ significantly from sea-level reports.

Bring physical maps or offline GPS, as mobile signal is inconsistent or non-existent in the valley.

What to avoid

Attempting the full loop in heavy fog or high winds, as the cliff edges become extremely hazardous.

Etiquette

Stick to designated paths to prevent erosion and avoid disturbing grazing livestock. Carry out all waste and follow the Scottish Outdoor Access Code.
