Overview

Hōkō-ji is a Rinzai Zen Buddhist temple founded in 1371 by the monk Mukai Mushin. It is widely recognized for its extensive temple grounds that feature a significant collection of 500 Rakan stone statues scattered along a forested mountainside path. The temple serves as the head temple of the Hōkō-ji branch of the Rinzai school. Its architecture includes the Hondo (main hall) and the Sanmon Gate, which exhibit traditional Japanese Buddhist wood-frame construction. The surrounding Okuyama woods create a secluded, meditative environment for visitors. The temple grounds are designed to follow the natural contours of the valley, integrating Japanese landscape gardening with the local topography.

Insider tips

Wear comfortable, slip-on walking shoes as you will be frequently removing them to enter temple buildings and walking on uneven forest paths.

Bring bug spray if visiting during the humid summer months, as the forest trail is prone to mosquitoes.

Allow extra time to traverse the entire Rakan forest trail, as it involves a moderate incline.

What to avoid

Do not wander off the marked forest paths, as the terrain is rugged and the surrounding woods are private property.

Etiquette

Remove shoes before entering temple buildings, maintain silence while on temple grounds, and do not touch or lean on the stone statues.
