Overview

Lutauyang Jiang Family Settlement is the largest and most well-preserved traditional Minnan-style village cluster in Taiwan. Occupying over 3.5 hectares, the settlement features over 130 dwellings organized around a central ancestral hall known as the Jiang Family Ancestral Shrine. The layout follows a traditional 'siheyuan' architectural pattern, constructed largely from local materials including bamboo, mud brick, and red clay tiles. Many residents of the Jiang family still occupy the dwellings, making it a living historical community rather than a static museum. The central axis is aligned according to traditional feng shui principles, facing the surrounding hills of the Nanxi District. Several of the structures date back to the early Qing Dynasty period, representing centuries of continuous habitation.

Insider tips

Walk the narrow alleys slowly to appreciate the authentic brick textures and traditional wooden joinery.

Respect the privacy of residents, as many of these homes are active, private households.

Carry water and sun protection, as the village is largely exposed to the sun with limited shaded corridors.

What to avoid

Do not attempt to touch or climb on the older, crumbling mud-brick walls, as they are fragile and undergoing preservation.

Etiquette

Maintain a quiet volume and do not enter private dwellings unless invited; photography of residents should be done discreetly.
