Overview

The Monument to the Assen Dynasty commemorates the restoration of the Bulgarian state in 1185 by the brothers Asen, Peter, Kaloyan, and Ivan Asen II. Erected in 1985 to celebrate the 800th anniversary of the uprising against the Byzantine Empire, the monument features a central 33-meter tall sword pointing skyward. Four bronze statues surround the sword, representing the Tsar brothers and the historical strength of the Second Bulgarian Empire. The sculpture is situated on a peninsula formed by a meander of the Yantra River. Its design incorporates Brutalist architectural aesthetics common in late 20th-century Bulgarian commemorative art. The monument serves as a symbolic centerpiece for the city of Veliko Tarnovo, highlighting its status as the medieval capital. It is constructed from reinforced concrete and bronze. The surrounding Sveta Gora area provides a panoramic view of the old town architecture and the Tsarevets Fortress.

What to avoid

Do not attempt to climb the bronze statues or the central sword structure, as the area is monitored and surfaces are slick.
