Interesting facts
1

The park contains 'The Hors', a young, growing dune area where new dunes are actively formed by wind and sea currents.

2

It hosts the Spoonbill, which uses the park's wet dune slacks as a primary nesting ground.

3

The dunes are home to the Natterjack toad, which depends on the shallow, temporary pools found in the dune valleys.

4

Several former military bunkers from World War II remain embedded within the dunes, now serving as habitats for bat colonies.

5

The park's soil composition varies significantly from nutrient-poor sand to limestone-rich areas, supporting highly distinct plant communities.

6

Coastal erosion and sand accumulation constantly reshape the western coastline, making the park a dynamic, non-static environment.

Overview

Nationaal Park Duinen van Texel covers approximately 43 square kilometers along the western coastline of Texel, the largest Wadden Sea island in the Netherlands. The park spans from the southern tip at De Hors to the northern lighthouse at De Cocksdorp. It features a diverse landscape of shifting sand dunes, salt marshes, wet dune slacks, and heathlands. The area is managed as a protected ecosystem to preserve its unique flora, including rare orchids, and its significant populations of breeding birds. Several marked trails cross the dunes, providing access to habitats ranging from pine forests to open, wind-swept sand drifts. It is the only national park in the Netherlands that encompasses an entire barrier island landscape. The park is integrated into the larger Wadden Sea UNESCO World Heritage site.

Insider tips

Bring binoculars as the park is a premier location for birdwatching throughout the year.

Stay strictly on the marked paths to protect fragile dune vegetation and nesting wildlife.

Check the local wind forecast, as the exposed coastal dunes can be significantly colder and windier than the inland parts of the island.

What to avoid

Walking through the 'rustgebieden' (quiet zones), which are clearly signed and strictly off-limits to protect ground-nesting birds.

Etiquette

Keep dogs on a leash, take all litter back with you, and do not pick any plants or disturb wildlife habitats.
