Hildegard of Bingen entered the monastery as a young girl and lived there under the guidance of Jutta of Sponheim.
The name Disibodenberg translates to 'Mount of Disibod' after the Irish missionary who settled there in 640 AD.

Disibodenberg Monastery is a ruined 7th-century Benedictine site located at the confluence of the Glan and Nahe rivers. Founded by the Irish monk Disibod, the site later gained prominence as the home of Hildegard of Bingen, who lived here for nearly 40 years. The ruins feature remnants of the Romanesque abbey church and the original monastic complex. Extensive excavations have uncovered foundations dating back to the Merovingian and Carolingian periods. The monastery was secularized in the 16th century following the Reformation and subsequently fell into disrepair. The site remains a protected archaeological monument managed by a private foundation. It offers educational paths through the ruins and an integrated museum covering the local history and the life of Hildegard. The monastery is situated on a plateau surrounded by vineyards and deciduous forests.
