A raw, windswept geological landscape

Interesting facts
1

The rock layers at Xiaoyeliu were once deep-sea sediments that were thrust upward by the collision of the Philippine Sea Plate and the Eurasian Plate.

2

The name 'Xiaoyeliu' literally translates to 'Little Yeliu', referencing its resemblance to the iconic mushroom-shaped rock formations in northern Taiwan.

3

The site contains significant fossilized coral reefs that are visible within the exposed sedimentary rock faces.

4

The coastal landscape is constantly being reshaped by high-salinity spray and strong ocean currents, leading to rapid honeycomb weathering.

5

The area is an active geological site where the interaction between seismic uplift and wave erosion can be observed in real-time.

Overview

Xiaoyeliu, also known as Fugang Geopark, features distinct sedimentary rock formations created by tectonic activity and marine erosion. The site consists of tilted sandstone, limestone, and shale layers that resemble the more famous Yeliu Geopark on Taiwan’s north coast, hence its name. Visitors can walk along a rugged coastline characterized by honeycomb weathering, tofu rocks, and fossil corals embedded within the stone. These geological features are part of the East Coast National Scenic Area. The area is located directly adjacent to the Pacific Ocean, providing a clear vantage point toward Green Island. Interpretive signage throughout the site explains the geological transformation of these oceanic strata.

Insider tips

Wear footwear with high-traction soles as the rocks are uneven and can be slippery when wet.

Check local tide charts before visiting, as high tide can submerge sections of the coastal trail.

Stay on designated paths to avoid damaging fragile coral fossils and delicate rock structures.

What to avoid

Do not wander onto the outer reef edges during high tide or rough sea conditions due to the risk of rogue waves.

Etiquette

Do not touch, climb on, or chip away pieces of the rock formations as they are part of a protected geological landscape.
