Overview

Križna Cave (Cross Cave) is a karst cave system in Slovenia renowned for its series of 22 subterranean emerald-green lakes. The cave is part of a 8.2-kilometer-long system carved by the Bloščica stream. It is internationally recognized for its exceptionally high concentration of cave bear remains, which were discovered within the chambers. The cave remains in a near-natural state with no electrical lighting installed to protect the cave environment. Visitors access the deeper sections of the system by small rubber boats to navigate the lakes. The constant underground temperature stays at approximately 8 degrees Celsius year-round. It is protected as a natural heritage site and strictly managed to preserve its fragile ecosystem.

Insider tips

Wear high-quality waterproof hiking boots and dress in multiple warm layers, as the cave remains cold regardless of outside weather.

Book your tour significantly in advance, as group sizes are strictly limited to protect the cave ecosystem.

Bring a high-capacity camera that performs well in low-light conditions, as artificial flash photography is strictly regulated to protect wildlife.

What to avoid

Do not attempt to explore the cave beyond the designated tour routes, as the interior is fragile and navigation requires specialized knowledge.

Good to know

Tours must be pre-booked in advance; operations are subject to water levels, which may occasionally necessitate closures during periods of extreme flooding.

Etiquette
