Interesting facts
1

The waterfall is not fed by a traditional surface stream but by underground water from the Yatsugatake volcanic range filtering through volcanic strata.

2

The name 'Doryu' (Dragon-Breathing) refers to the way the mist and scattered water droplets appear to exhale from the cliff face.

3

The surrounding Kawamata Valley area is part of a larger network of walking trails known for significant autumn foliage shifts.

4

The water temperature remains cold year-round, contributing to the distinct microclimate of the mossy rock face.

5

The waterfall is situated on a section of the river that frequently changes appearance based on seasonal rainfall and snowmelt patterns.

Overview

Doryu-no-taki, or 'Dragon-Breathing Waterfall,' is a unique cascade where water emerges from multiple points across a 10-meter-high, 15-meter-wide moss-covered rock wall. Unlike traditional vertical falls, this water seeps from the Yatsugatake volcanic strata, creating a curtain-like effect. The trail to the waterfall spans approximately 1.5 kilometers through the Kawamata Valley, following the river through a forest of Japanese larch and white birch. The area is characterized by high humidity, which supports a lush carpet of moss and ferns along the riverbanks. It is part of the larger Yatsugatake South麓 recreation area in Yamanashi Prefecture. The walk features a gentle incline and several small wooden bridges crossing the river. The waterfall's flow remains relatively consistent throughout the year due to its subterranean source. Visitors reach the main viewing platform via a well-maintained, relatively flat gravel path.

Photo spot

The main wooden viewing platform located directly across from the waterfall provides the best vantage point for the full width of the cascade.

Insider tips

Wear waterproof hiking shoes, as the trail can be muddy near the riverbank.

Bring insect repellent during the summer months due to the high moisture levels in the valley.

Use the available handrails on the bridges, as they can become slippery when damp.

What to avoid

Attempting to climb the rock face or wading into the water, which can be dangerous and harmful to the moss.

Good to know

The trail may be inaccessible or hazardous during heavy winter snowfall; check local conditions for trail closures between December and March.

Etiquette

Stay on the marked trail to protect the fragile moss ecosystem.
