Interesting facts
1

The arch is composed of Cretaceous-age monzogranite, which formed approximately 100 million years ago beneath the Earth's surface.

2

The formation results from 'spheroidal weathering,' where water enters joint patterns in the granite and erodes the rock from the inside out.

3

The Arch Rock Nature Trail connects to the Heart Rock trail, another popular nearby geological curiosity.

4

The area is situated in the transition zone between the Colorado Desert and the Mojave Desert.

Overview

Arch Rock is a natural granite geological formation located within the White Tank Campground area of Joshua Tree National Park. The landmark is reached via a 1.4-mile round-trip trail that features minimal elevation gain, making it accessible to most hikers. The arch was formed through the erosion of monzogranite, a process characterized by chemical weathering and exfoliation typical of the Mojave Desert landscape. Visitors can walk directly beneath and around the base of the rock formation. The surrounding terrain is composed of large boulder piles and pinyon-juniper woodland. It is one of the most recognizable geological features in the park due to its distinct, circular aperture.

Insider tips

Bring significantly more water than you think you need, as the desert climate causes rapid dehydration.

Wear shoes with high-traction rubber soles to navigate the sandy trail and uneven granite surfaces safely.

Visit during the shoulder seasons to avoid extreme heat indices.

What to avoid

Do not attempt this hike during the mid-day heat of summer, as there is almost no shade along the trail.

Etiquette

Practice Leave No Trace principles; do not climb on top of the arch to prevent erosion and damage; stay on marked trails to protect fragile desert crust.
