2

The formations are protected as a significant natural landmark within the Kokořínsko region.

3

The wooden staircase leading to the site was constructed to prevent soil erosion and damage to the fragile sandstone terrain.

4

The surrounding landscape is part of a larger geological system of Cretaceous sandstone formations typical of Northern Bohemia.

5

Differential erosion at this site is an ongoing geological process, meaning the structures are constantly changing shape on a geological timescale.

Overview

Pokličky are iconic sandstone rock formations located within the Kokořínsko-Máchův kraj Protected Landscape Area in the Czech Republic. These formations feature large, mushroom-shaped pillars created by differential erosion of iron-rich sandstone caps resting on softer sandstone pedestals. The site is accessible via a steep wooden staircase that ascends the valley slope to the viewpoint level. Geologically, these are classified as rock mushrooms formed during the Tertiary and Quaternary periods. The formations are situated above the village of Mšeno, carved into the forested landscape of the Kokořín Valley. Visitors can view both the 'Large' and 'Small' groups of these sandstone pillars. The terrain consists of protected rock cities characterized by deep ravines and dense pine forests.

Photo spot

The designated wooden observation platform provides the clearest, unobstructed view of the largest mushroom formation.

Insider tips

Wear hiking boots with good grip as the staircase and surrounding sandy trails can be slippery.

Bring sufficient water as there are no amenities or vendors at the top of the viewpoint.

Visit during the shoulder season to avoid heavy foot traffic on the narrow staircases.

What to avoid

Attempting to climb or touch the sandstone pillars; the surface is extremely friable and can be easily damaged.

Etiquette
