Overview

The Levizzano Castle is a medieval fortification located on a hill overlooking the Grasparossa vineyard region in Castelvetro di Modena. The current structure incorporates the 11th-century Matildic tower, which originally served as a defensive outpost for the Canossa family. The castle underwent significant architectural renovations during the 17th century when it was converted into a noble residence. It features the 'Sala delle Vedute,' a room decorated with 17th-century frescoes depicting the surrounding landscape. The site serves as the headquarters for the Museum of the Grasparossa and the Wine History of Castelvetro. It is owned by the Municipality of Castelvetro di Modena. The fortification remains one of the best-preserved examples of feudal architecture in the Modena Apennines.
