Overview

Momchilovata Krepost, or Momchil's Fortress, is a 6th-century Byzantine stronghold situated on the St. Spas peak in the Rhodope Mountains. The site is named after the semi-legendary 14th-century Bulgarian ruler Momchil, who utilized the fortification during his resistance against the Ottoman expansion. Excavations have revealed substantial defensive walls, a residential quarter, and a water supply system. The site offers panoramic views of the surrounding Rhodope landscape from its high-altitude vantage point. It serves as an open-air archaeological site preserving remnants of late antiquity and medieval military architecture.
