Overview

Manai Falls is an 17-meter-high waterfall cascading into the Gokase River within the narrow Takachiho Gorge. The waterfall is sourced by a natural spring located in the upper reaches of the Takachiho Shrine area, known as the Amenomanai spring. It is recognized as one of the 100 Best Waterfalls of Japan, a designation selected by the Ministry of the Environment. The surrounding cliffs consist of volcanic basalt columns created by historical Aso volcano eruptions. Visitors can view the falls from the walking trail along the gorge rim or from rented rowboats on the river below. The waterfall is an integral part of the local mythology associated with the descent of the deity Ninigi-no-Mikoto.

Insider tips

Rent a rowboat to navigate directly under the falls for the most immersive perspective.

Wear shoes with high-traction soles, as the riverside paths and stone stairs can be slippery from constant mist.

Visit the nearby Takachiho Shrine before or after the gorge to understand the cultural context of the site.

What to avoid

Do not attempt to swim in the gorge; currents near the waterfall base are unpredictable and dangerous.

Good to know

Boat rentals are subject to suspension during high water levels or heavy rainfall events.

Etiquette

Stay on marked paths to prevent erosion of the volcanic rock; maintain quiet volume to respect the site's religious significance.
