Overview

The Basilica of Superga is a late-Baroque architectural landmark situated atop the 672-meter Superga hill, offering panoramic views of Turin and the Italian Alps. Commissioned by Victor Amadeus II of Savoy and designed by Filippo Juvarra, the church was completed in 1731 as a votive offering following the 1706 Siege of Turin. The structure features a large circular dome and a portico with eight Corinthian columns. Beneath the main floor lies the Royal Crypt, which serves as the traditional burial place for members of the House of Savoy. The site is historically significant for the 1949 Superga air disaster, which claimed the lives of the entire 'Grande Torino' football team. A memorial behind the church commemorates the site where the plane struck the embankment. The complex includes a convent, a dome that can be climbed for higher vantage points, and royal apartments.

Photo spot

The terrace in front of the basilica provides the best panoramic shot of the church facade with the mountains in the background.

Insider tips

Bring a windbreaker or layers, as temperatures are noticeably cooler at the hilltop than in the city center.

Check the horizon before heading up; thick fog or heavy cloud cover can completely obscure the view of the Alps.

Wear shoes with good grip if you plan to climb to the dome, as the spiral stairs are steep and narrow.

What to avoid

Do not attempt to walk up the steep hillside road from the city base unless prepared for a strenuous mountain hike.

Good to know

Closed on certain Tuesdays; the dome and royal apartments may be inaccessible during specific private religious services or local holidays.

Etiquette

Maintain a quiet, respectful demeanor as this is an active religious site and a memorial; keep shoulders and knees covered.
