Overview

The Panagia Mavriotissa Monastery is a Byzantine-era monastic complex situated on a narrow peninsula extending into Lake Orestiada. Founded in the 11th century during the reign of Alexios I Komnenos, the site features a primary church adorned with frescoes dating from the 12th to the 17th centuries. The exterior walls contain well-preserved Byzantine iconography depicting biblical scenes and local saints. The site includes a smaller chapel dedicated to Saint John the Theologian, built during the 17th century. A massive, ancient plane tree stands near the entrance, estimated to be over 1,000 years old. The complex is currently an active monastic site under the jurisdiction of the Metropolis of Kastoria. Its location provides 270-degree views of the lake and the surrounding Grammos and Vitsi mountain ranges.

Insider tips

Walk the paved path along the shoreline of the peninsula to reach the monastery instead of driving directly to the gate.

Look for the external frescoes located on the monastery’s facade, as they are distinct from the interior paintings.

Bring a light jacket, as the lake breeze can make the peninsula significantly cooler than the town center.

What to avoid

Do not attempt to walk around the entire peninsula in flip-flops, as parts of the shoreline trail are uneven.

Etiquette

Visitors must cover shoulders and knees; avoid loud talking in the courtyard and do not photograph the altar area.
