Overview

The Archaeological Site of Mystras is a fortified Byzantine city located on the slopes of Mount Taygetos. It served as the capital of the Despotate of the Morea in the 14th and 15th centuries. The site is divided into three distinct areas: the Upper Town, the Lower Town, and the Kastro (fortress). Its architecture includes unique 'Mystras-type' churches that blend cross-in-square layouts with basilican elements. Significant structures include the Palace of the Despots, the Cathedral of Saint Demetrios, and the Pantanassa Monastery. The site contains a well-preserved collection of 13th to 15th-century frescoes representing the final flourishing of Byzantine art. It was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1989. The settlement was abandoned in 1832 following the Greek War of Independence.
