The Măcin Mountains are the oldest mountains in Romania, dating back approximately 300-400 million years.

It is one of the few places in Romania where the steppe viper (Vipera ursinii moldavica) can be found.

Țuțuiatu Peak is the highest point of the Măcin Mountains in Romania, reaching an elevation of 467 meters. Located within the Măcin Mountains National Park, the peak is part of the oldest mountain range in the country, formed during the Paleozoic era. The geological composition features granite, porphyry, and crystalline schists, creating a stark contrast to the surrounding plains. It is a biodiversity hotspot where Mediterranean, Balkan, and Pontic floral and faunal elements intersect. The terrain is characterized by rocky ridges and erosion-sculpted slopes rather than dense alpine forests. The summit provides a panoramic view of the Danube Delta, the Brăila Plain, and the Dobruja plateau.
