Overview

Naravni rezervat Škocjanski zatok is the largest brackish wetland in Slovenia, covering 122 hectares on the edge of Koper. The reserve features two distinct zones: a freshwater marsh and a brackish lagoon connected to the Gulf of Trieste. It serves as a critical stopover and nesting site for over 250 species of birds, including flamingos and various herons. The area was restored from a highly degraded state in the late 20th century to recover its original biodiversity. A circular educational trail leads visitors through diverse habitats via wooden boardwalks and bird hides. The site functions as a managed nature reserve under the protection of BirdLife Slovenia. Grazing animals, including Camargue horses and Podolian cattle, are used to maintain the vegetation in the freshwater area. It is a vital research site for ornithologists and marine biologists studying Mediterranean coastal ecosystems.
