Interesting facts
1

The cliff's structure includes visible layers of geological sediments deposited by glacial activity thousands of years ago.

2

It is one of the most active coastal erosion zones in Lithuania, with significant sections of the cliff face collapsing into the sea periodically.

The site acts as a major migration corridor for thousands of birds passing along the Baltic coastline.

4

Large boulders and rocks strewn along the shoreline below the cliff were deposited by glacial melting.

Overview

Olando Kepurės skardis, or Holland's Cap, is a 24-meter-high coastal cliff located on the Baltic Sea shore within the Pajūris Regional Park. The cliff is a paraglacial formation created by the Baltic glacier tongue, primarily composed of moraine, sand, and gravel. Its unique name stems from its historical use by sailors as a navigational landmark, appearing to look like a Dutch cap from the sea. The cliff is subject to constant erosion, with waves gradually washing away its base and causing landslides. The area features a mix of coastal forests and rare plant species adapted to the sandy, wind-swept environment. Walking trails connect the cliff to the surrounding Seaside Regional Park landscapes. It serves as an important site for migrating birds, particularly birds of prey, during spring and autumn.

Insider tips

Wear sturdy, closed-toe footwear as the paths are sandy, uneven, and can be slippery near the cliff edge.

Bring binoculars if visiting during migration seasons to observe the raptors passing overhead.

Stay on marked trails to prevent further erosion and ensure personal safety near unstable edges.

What to avoid

Do not attempt to descend the steep, unstable cliff face directly to the beach; use the designated wooden staircases.

Etiquette

Respect the fragile ecosystem by not climbing on the cliff face and staying strictly on designated paths.
