Overview

Torre de Lapela is the sole surviving element of a 14th-century castle fortification located in the village of Lapela, Monção. The tower was constructed during the reign of King Dinis to serve as a defensive stronghold along the Minho River border with Spain. It features a square stone plan and stands on a granite outcrop overlooking the river valley. The structure historically played a vital role in the defensive lines protecting the Portuguese territory against northern incursions. Restoration works in the early 21st century reinforced its structural integrity and preserved its medieval masonry. The interior has been adapted to function as an interpretive space providing context on the military history of the Minho region. Visitors can access the upper levels to observe the surrounding river landscape. It remains a key example of medieval defensive architecture in the Alto Minho district.
