1

The system operates as a bi-cable gondola, which is specifically designed to withstand high wind speeds common on coastal ridges.

2

Duryunsan is part of the Honam vein of the Sobaek Mountain Range, characterized by its jagged, multi-peaked ridge line.

4

The base of the mountain houses Daeheungsa Temple, a significant historic site designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Overview

The Duryunsan Cable Car transports passengers from the base of the mountain to the ridge of Go-bong peak in Haenam-gun. It covers a linear distance of approximately 1.6 kilometers, ascending to a terminal located at an elevation of 638 meters. From the top station, a wooden observation deck provides panoramic views of the Dadohae Maritime National Park and the southern coastline of the Korean Peninsula. On clear days, the visibility extends to Jeju Island and Hallasan Mountain. The cable car system is built to minimize environmental impact on the surrounding protected woodland area. The upper terminal connects directly to a hiking path leading to the summit of Duryunsan, known for its unique rock formations and historic Buddhist temples situated in the valley below.

Insider tips

Bring a windbreaker even in summer, as temperatures are significantly lower and wind gusts are frequent at the summit ridge.

Wear hiking-appropriate footwear if you intend to walk the path from the upper terminal to the actual mountain peak.

Check local weather reports for fog; visibility can drop to near zero at the summit platform during inclement conditions.

What to avoid

Do not attempt the hike to the summit in formal wear or unsuitable footwear, as the terrain becomes rugged and rocky beyond the observation deck.

Good to know

Operations are weather-dependent and may be suspended during high winds or heavy fog.

Etiquette

Maintain silence on the observation deck to respect the surrounding natural tranquility; do not stray from marked paths.
