5

It is a critical habitat for high-altitude bird species, including the endemic Green-tailed Sunbird and Ashy-throated Warbler.

Overview

Ang Ka Nature Trail is a high-altitude boardwalk situated at the summit of Doi Inthanon, Thailand's highest mountain. The trail winds through a primary cloud forest characterized by high humidity, constant mist, and dense carpets of sphagnum moss. Visitors traverse a loop approximately 300 to 500 meters long that remains elevated above the fragile ecosystem. The environment acts as a watershed for the surrounding area, supporting specialized flora adapted to cool, mountainous conditions. Epiphytes, ferns, and ancient trees dominate the landscape due to the persistent cloud cover. It is part of the protected Doi Inthanon National Park. The trail provides an accessible look at alpine vegetation rarely seen elsewhere in Thailand. High elevation results in significantly cooler temperatures than the nearby lowland valleys.

Insider tips

Bring a light waterproof jacket or windbreaker as temperatures remain low and mist can create moisture year-round.

Remain strictly on the wooden boardwalk to protect the unique and fragile mountain bog ecosystem.

Visit quietly, as the thick forest canopy muffles sound and improves the chances of spotting rare bird species.

What to avoid

Stepping off the boardwalk onto the mossy ground; wearing thin clothing that does not account for rapid temperature drops at the summit.

Etiquette

Maintain silence to protect the wildlife; strictly no littering or picking of plants.
