Overview

Alexandrovskaya Sloboda served as the de facto capital of Russia for 17 years during the reign of Ivan the Terrible. It was from this fortress that the Tsar directed his Oprichnina policy and managed the state during the Livonian War. The complex features preserved 16th-century stone architecture, including the Trinity Cathedral and the unique tent-roofed Church of the Intercession. Visitors can explore the recreated royal chambers and the basement torture chambers. The site is part of the Golden Ring of Russia, documenting the shift from medieval princedoms to the centralized Tsardom. It currently functions as a state museum-reserve displaying artifacts from the 16th and 17th centuries.
