The Trans-Canada Highway is the longest national highway in the world, stretching from St. John's, Newfoundland to Victoria, British Columbia.
The monument was specifically placed to commemorate the end of the Trans-Canada Highway, although the official western terminus of the highway is technically in Nanaimo, where the highway connects to the ferry system.
The bronze statue of Terry Fox was sculpted by artist Franklin Lewis and unveiled in 2001.
The site sits on the unceded territory of the Lekwungen people, known today as the Songhees and Esquimalt Nations.
The monument is located at the southern tip of Douglas Street, which is Victoria’s primary thoroughfare running north to south through the city.
The Mile Zero Monument serves as the official southern terminus of the Trans-Canada Highway, which spans 7,821 kilometers across the country. Located at the intersection of Douglas Street and Dallas Road in Victoria, it marks the symbolic starting point of the world's longest national highway. The site features a modest stone cairn and a bronze statue honoring Terry Fox. The Terry Fox statue commemorates his 1980 Marathon of Hope, which began in St. John’s, Newfoundland, and concluded prematurely in Ontario. The monument is situated within the expansive Beacon Hill Park landscape, overlooking the Strait of Juan de Fuca. It acts as a major waypoint for cross-country cyclists and road-trippers starting or finishing their journey. The surrounding area connects to a popular seaside pathway system used by locals and tourists alike.
