Overview

The Church of the Ascension in Kolomenskoye is a stone tent-roofed church commissioned in 1532 by Grand Prince Vasili III to celebrate the birth of his heir, Ivan the Terrible. It represents the first major instance of a stone tent-roofed design replacing traditional Byzantine-style cross-domed churches in Russia. The structure sits on a high cliff overlooking the steep bank of the Moskva River. It was the first Russian site to be inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1994. The building features a unique combination of Gothic elements and traditional Russian wooden architecture translated into stone. It serves as the centerpiece of the Kolomenskoye Museum-Reserve.

Insider tips

Walk down the steep slope toward the river for a panoramic perspective of the church against the horizon.

Do not attempt to climb the exterior galleries or stairs beyond designated viewing areas; avoid visiting during heavy rain as the paths become slippery.

Good to know

Closed periodically during inclement weather for preservation purposes.
