Overview

The Engstligenfälle are the second-highest waterfalls in Switzerland, plunging 600 meters in two stages from the Engstligenalp plateau into the valley floor. These falls are fed by meltwater from the Wildstrubel massif. The site features a challenging via ferrata route that ascends alongside the waterfall, requiring climbing equipment and physical conditioning. A paved panoramic path provides viewing access to the base of the falls. During the summer, cattle are transported up to the high alpine pastures, an event known as the Alpaufzug. The area serves as a primary source for the Engstlige River.

The lower observation area provides a vertical perspective of the entire two-stage drop.

Insider tips

Wear high-grip hiking boots, as the spray from the falls makes surrounding paths and rocks extremely slippery.

The via ferrata is strictly for experienced climbers; consult local guides if you are unfamiliar with Swiss alpine safety standards.

Bring a rain jacket even on sunny days to protect against the persistent mist near the base of the falls.

What to avoid

Attempting to climb the rock faces outside of the designated via ferrata route, which is dangerous and forbidden.

Good to know

The via ferrata is only accessible during the summer and early autumn months; it remains closed during winter and spring due to avalanche risk.

Etiquette

Stick to marked trails to protect sensitive alpine vegetation; use of climbing gear is mandatory for the via ferrata.
