Interesting facts
1

The initial artwork was created by a group of Neapolitan sailors who survived a storm in 1675.

2

Alfonso Barone, who inherited the project from his father, used only simple tools like a chisel and hammer to carve the cavernous interior.

3

The church is located at sea level, leaving the walls constantly exposed to salt spray and high humidity.

4

Some of the statues were carved to serve as 'furniture' for the cave, including seats and religious altars.

5

The site was almost completely destroyed by a catastrophic landslide in the late 19th century before being rebuilt by the Barone family.

6

It is technically a subterranean cave system rather than a traditional constructed edifice.

Overview

The Church of Piedigrotta is a unique religious site entirely hand-carved into the sandstone cliffs along the Tyrrhenian coast. Unlike traditional masonry churches, the interior space, altars, and biblical statues were excavated directly from the rock face by local artists. The site originated in the 17th century when a shipwrecked crew sought refuge and placed a painting of the Madonna in a natural cave. Angelo and Alfonso Barone, a local father-son duo, spent decades in the late 19th and early 20th centuries expanding the cave into a series of interconnected grottoes. The walls feature detailed bas-reliefs depicting scenes from the life of Jesus, including the Last Supper and the Nativity. Natural light filters through man-made shafts carved into the cliffside, illuminating the saline-eroded stone. The church suffered significant neglect during the mid-20th century but underwent extensive structural restoration in the late 1970s to preserve its crumbling sculptures. It is one of the most visited cultural sites in the Calabria region, known locally as the Chiesetta della Grotta.

Insider tips

Wear footwear with good grip, as the cave floor can be damp and slippery due to proximity to the sea.

Bring a light jacket, as the interior temperature remains significantly cooler than the outdoor sun.

Limit your visit to clear weather days, as heavy rain occasionally triggers safety closures due to unstable cliff conditions.

What to avoid

Do not attempt to touch or lean on the carved sandstone figures, as the material is soft, porous, and highly susceptible to erosion.

Good to know

Open daily during the high season; may operate on a limited schedule or close entirely during the winter months due to storm risks.

Etiquette

Shoulders and knees should be covered as it is a place of worship; maintain a quiet tone inside the confined stone chambers.
