Overview

The Old Wall of Trujillo, known locally as the Baluarte Herrera, represents the last remaining fragment of the defensive perimeter constructed in the 17th century to protect the city from pirate attacks. Built between 1687 and 1690 under the administration of Viceroy Melchor de Navarra y Rocafull, the wall was designed to secure Trujillo from threats arriving via the port of Huanchaco. The structure is composed primarily of adobe bricks and mortar, typical of the colonial period in the region. Only a small, restored section remains today near the intersection of Jirón Pizarro and the inner city ring. The wall once spanned approximately 5.5 kilometers and featured fifteen bastions. It serves as a physical reminder of the defensive architectural strategies employed by the Spanish Crown in coastal Peru. The site is currently maintained as a small urban historical landmark.
